Clean Air Zone report November 2021 to February 2022

The Portsmouth Clean Air Zone launched on 29 November 2021.
Air pollution is the biggest environmental killer in the UK, so it’s vital for us to take steps to make the air we breathe cleaner for everyone.
Some areas of Portsmouth have levels of pollutants, like nitrogen dioxide, that are likely to remain above safe legal limits unless we take strong action quickly.
The city is densely populated and while many of us need to own a vehicle, they cause congestion and contribute to over 50% of air pollution.
One way in which we’re tackling air pollution and climate change in the city is the charging Clean Air Zone (CAZ). Watch this short video to find out more.
Our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) plays a big part in improving air quality, and we’re also working on our Local Transport Plan, which prioritises delivering cleaner air.
Working in partnership with Hampshire County Council, the Isle of Wight Council and local transport operators, Portsmouth City Council are delivering a programme called South East Hampshire Rapid Transit. Through a network of bus priority routes, direct rapid transit services will reduce journey times for those travelling into the city.
More people are choosing electric vehicles. Until now, charging these vehicles has normally happened off-street in car parks, garages and driveways. In built-up cities like Portsmouth, off-street parking isn’t an option for many residents. By installing charge points on-street, residents can charge their plug-in electric vehicles at home.
